The Chicago Bears have been without David Montgomery for the past four weeks, but there is a chance that he is going to be active this week. Earlier in the week, David Montgomery returned to practice which signaled a 21-day window for him to return.

However, coach Matt Nagy said that he has a really good chance to play just a few days after entering the window.

This would obviously be a key return for the Chicago Bears. With a bye week coming there was a thought that after missing this week, Montgomery would be completely healthy coming out of the bye week.

However, now it appears that he is going to get activated, play, then get a bye week after being eased in. This could set David Montgomery up for a strong stretch run.

What does this mean for Khalil Herbert?

The big question comes down to the usage, and how it affects Khalil Herbert. Montgomery may be eased back in for his first week back, but at the same time, Nagy said that when Montgomery is active Nagy expects him to get the lion’s share of the work.

We highlighted that while Hebrert and Montgomery are different runners, that may be for the best. Montgomery wins more with power while Herbert has more burst to the edges and through the holes.

A right mix of both would turn this team into a run-heavy threat with multiple ways to hurt you. However, we have learned that what you want and what Matt Nagy wants are different things.

It sounds like they are going to go back to their same offense with Herbert in the backup role. The Bears still have until tomorrow to decide, and the extra day maybe what helped Montgomery get back.

If Montgomery is healthy, expect him to get work like a starter, and expect Herbert to be relegated to the bench.
