Immediately after drafting one interior lineman, the Bears turn around and draft another. This is, after all, Ryan Poles’ team. It’s all about protecting Fields and setting him up for success.

Luke Fortner is another senior coming out of a big-time school, in Kentucky, who comes into Chicago as a guy who will compete. He may not necessarily become a starter in his first year, but Fortner immediately becomes a nice depth piece to build upon.

For starters, Fortner has the size of a mammoth. He stands 6-foot-6, weighing 305 pounds. For his size, Fortner actually has pretty good athleticism. He can get out in space well enough to be used in pulling situations. The area he needs to improve, though, is in his technique. Fortner needs to get better with his hand placement and timing.

Also, he does have the strength to play at the pro level. But, Fortner needs to work on his base. He can get pushed back at times, therefore he’s got to work on his anchor strength.

Fortner projects as an interior lineman who blocks best in a run-heavy system, which is hopefully what Luke Getsy will be running as he comes from the Shanahan tree. The fact Fortner can play both guard and center also gives the Bears lots of flexibility.
