It may be time for the Chicago Bears to add new weapons for Justin Fields
Wide receivers still available in free agency that the Chicago Bears could sign
Although there are only a handful of receivers who have yet to find a team to play in 2022, these players are former Pro Bowlers and have put up 1,000 yard receiving seasons at one point in their careers. Yes, all these receivers are available, but there are more realistic options for Chicago.
- Will Fuller
- T.Y. Hilton
- Emmanuel Sanders
- Cole Beasley
- Allen Hurns
- DeDe Westbrook
- DeSean Jackson
Will Fuller who was selected in the first round in the 2016 NFL draft out of Notre Dame makes sense. Fuller made an immediate impact recording 635 receiving yards his rookie season. It was not until the emergence of Deshaun Watson and Deandre Hopkins where Fuller would see his numbers take a leap.
In his second season, he led Texans receivers with seven touchdowns. He was seen as the perfect counter piece for a number one receiver. His tracking of the long ball and route running ability bought him a pay grade with the Dolphins, but due to a hand injury the one-year deal in Miami was short lived.
Fuller is only 28-years-old and capable of being what seems like a the perfect compliment receiver to Darnell Mooney. Fuller who spent well over half his career playing with Deshaun Watson, is rumored to be waiting the NFL’s appeal on his six-game suspension before making his decision on what team to play for this season.
As far as it goes for players like Emmanuel Sanders and DeSean Jackson who have reached an older age — both are 35 years old — playing on a Chicago Bears team that is essentially in a rebuild is not an ideal situation. The direction the franchise could most likely be seen heading is more than likely on players like Allen Hurns or DeDe Westbrook who in the past have been reliable, but still looking for an opportunity to make an impact else where.
It seems that the entire Roquan Smith contract dispute could be taking up most of the attention in the front office at Halas Hall. The approach may be to implement a receiver in after Saturday’s first preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs — as the coaching staff will start to evaluate the skill set of the position. The current depth chart for receivers had No.1 Darnell Mooney, No. 2 Equanimeous St. Brown and the third spot for the time remaining seems to be up for grabs.
