Players Hurting the Chicago Bears: Velus Jones, WR

Velus Jones has to be on this list. Whether he’s not been able to be on the field or he has been on the field but has muffed punts, Jones has been a big disappointment. Jones has indirectly cost the Bears at least one win. His muffed punt that led to a Commanders touchdown is the only reason why the Commanders scored in that game. The Bears offense wasn’t good enough then to put up enough points and they lost 12-7.

After losing his job on special teams, Jones hasn’t been able to do anything on the field on offense either. He scored his first touchdown in Week 5, but only has three catches on five targets for 24 yards. After the Chicago Bears traded for Chase Claypool, Jones hasn’t even seen the field the last two weeks. I’m glad to see that Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus aren’t going to play someone just because they drafted him, but seeing a third-round pick amount to nothing is more than disappointing.

This roster needs help at the wide receiver position. Justin Fields and the offense may have scored 30.3 points per game over the last three weeks, but that has more to do with Fields using his legs and the running game being dominant thanks to Khalil Herbert and David Montgomery. Ryan Poles needs to find a true WR1 in the 2023 NFL Draft.
