A once guaranteed training camp cut is now a lock to make Bears' 53-man roster

Not sure many people would have predicted that.

At the beginning of training camp, Chicago Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright was seen as an easy candidate to be cut when it was all over. Wright has shifted the narrative dramatically in two weeks.

There hasn't been a player in Bears camp who has been a bigger surprise than Wright, with his outstanding performances at practices. Bears Wire's Alyssa Barbieri gave Wright his section in her takeaways from Day 9 of training camp, where she now thinks that he will make the final roster.

"One of the biggest surprises of training camp has been the emergence of cornerback Nahshon Wright, who has been working with the first-team defense from Day 1 of training camp (with Pro Bowler Jaylon Johnson sidelined). Not only does Wright feel like a safe bet for the 53-man roster at this point, he's competing for the CB2 spot opposite Johnson."

Barbieri added that the Chicago Sun-Times reporter Patrick Finley shared a memorable play from Wright in Saturday's practice. Wright made what Finley called a "stellar" interception on quarterback Caleb Williams as he read a slant route and jumped in front of it in the end zone.

It's time to have a conversation about Wright and potentially starting

Johnson's injury has certainly opened up opportunities for cornerbacks like Tyrique Stevenson, Terell Smith, Zah Frazier, and Wright to get some much-needed reps on the field. Wright has answered the call almost as well as anyone else has.

The former third-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2021 has totaled 37 tackles, five pass deflections, one interception, and one tackle for loss in 32 career games. Wright was most recently with the Minnesota Vikings last year, but played just one game.

He signed a one-year deal with the Bears in the offseason, but it wasn't seen as a big move. It was more of adding a veteran to the cornerback room who can compete in camp. His chances of making the roster before camp were not high.

All the reports out of camp have been Wright has played well enough to keep him with the first team as CB2. Stevenson and Smith have been alternating in the rotation.

Once Johnson is back, it will become more of a three-way battle between Stevenson, Smith, and Wright. Many will lean towards Stevenson since he has more starting experience for Chicago.

Wright has made the conversation more interesting as he is on the right side of the 53-man roster predictions now.
