Everyone wants to focus on the emotional part of C.J. Gardner-Johnson as he enters his first game with the Chicago Bears against the Cincinnati Bengals in a Week 9 clash. Still, there's only one thing his coach, Dennis Allen, wants from him: to be the player on the field he knew.

Once the Bears signed Gardner-Johnson to a contract this week, it was clear that this was a match made in heaven, given that Allen coached the veteran defensive back when they were together in New Orleans with the Saints. That same player, Gardner-Johnson, who was then, is the same player Allen told the media he expects out of him.

"He's a highly competitive player, and I think he goes out there and competes on every single play. That's fully what I'd expect for him to do with us. He brings a little attitude to the football team, which I think is good."

What can Bears fans expect out of Gardner-Johnson this season

Bears head coach Ben Johnson already made it clear that Gardner-Johnson was going to play in the slot. The hope is that the former safety can step in for Kyler Gordon, who was placed on IR, and help a struggling, banged-up secondary.

Gardner-Johnson is a physical player, which made him an excellent safety, but now he will have to play with a different mindset in coverage. That's actually another strength of his, given how well he can perform in coverage.

In two separate seasons, Gardner-Johnson has posted six interceptions in a season, including leading the league in that stat back in 2022 with the Philadelphia Eagles. That's the same team where he continued that coverage skills success last year, hoisting a Lombardi Trophy over his head.

Gardner-Johnson is joining a strong situation in Chicago with a team that is sitting at 4-3 and holding its own in the NFC North division. Allen expects him to be the missing piece that can elevate the defense's play into a different stratosphere.
