Nobody is envying Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson right now as he has a tough decision to make prior to the team's Week 4 showdown with the Las Vegas Raiders.
During last week's 31-14 win over the Dallas Cowboys, starting right tackle Darnell Wright injured his elbow and missed some time before coming back into the game with a brace. He was replaced for a short time by Theo Benedet.
During practice this week, Wright did not participate on Wednesday and Thursday. This is now leaving Bears fans a bit nervous that they might not have Wright for the game.
Depending on how the rest of the week goes, Johnson might have to make a tough decision. He will have to decide between risking Wright's health and letting him play or replacing him, but who would that be?
Johnson's lingering decision on Wright's availability against Raiders
Wright is having an average season at best for the Bears in 2025. He currently has a Pro Football Focus overall grade of 66.2, ranking 34th out of 101 tackles. His strength has been in run blocking, as PFF gave him a grade of 79.3, ranking ninth in the NFL.
The major problem for Wright is simply mental mistakes and penalties. He has had six this season, that's at least two penalties a game.
Not practicing on two days of the week is usually not a great indicator that a player will play. The chances of Wright playing on Sunday are decreasing.
That would open the door for either Benedet or Ozzy Trapilo getting the start. Benedet already got playing time at right tackle last week and could be the frontrunner to get there. Some Bears fans want to see Trapilo on the field and give him a chance to see what they have in him.
Both guys are inexperienced as starters, so it really becomes a toss-up. Benedet impressed Johnson late in training camp, and if he had more reps, he might have been the starter at left tackle.
