While the feelings are mixed within the Chicago Bears fan base regarding the 2026 draft class, the team seems to be excited about who they have coming in.

One player that got a lot of chatter was third-round pick tight end Sam Roush due to the fact that the Bears already have Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet at the position. That didn't stop Bears head coach Ben Johnson from selecting him, as he had a reason for bringing Roush to the franchise.

"We were fortunate to get one that we are excited about," Johnson said via CHGO. "The more you can look to attack the defense, the flexibility that tight ends give you gives you another dimension to your offense."

Roush was considered the best blocking tight end in the draft, but he showed last year that he can be a good receiver as well. While playing at Stanford in 2025, he caught 49 receptions for 545 yards and two touchdowns.

The 2026 season will be a transitional year for Roush as he will most likely be used in 13 personnel as the blocking tight end on running plays. He could also come in on 12 personnel packages, as well as running situations or play action.

Many viewed the move as a potential replacement for Kmet once he leaves the team, as he has been the subject of extensive trade talk during the offseason. It is still possible that Kmet stays through the 2026 season, and then Roush will succeed him once the Bears are more confident in their young tight end.

The hope is that Loveland will emerge as one of the best receiving tight ends in the NFL, while Roush comes in as the backup and helps with blocking situations. That combo would be too good for the league to handle and help the Bears' offense evolve.
