Since the Chicago Bears' inception, this team has consistently struggled to secure a legitimate franchise quarterback. For the oldest team in the league, it had become laughable... until Chicago selected Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in 2024.
After what's now a franchise-record fifth game-winning drive this season, Williams spoke to the media following the victory over the Minnesota Vikings and boy, was he fired up. Most of what he said made Bears fans want to go run through a wall.
But, one thing stood out above the rest. He was asked about "killer instinct," to which he replied:
“For the idea of killer instinct, when there is blood in the water, we got to go."
That's right. Williams has it. He has "it." He's got that killer instinct that has evaded Bears quarterbacks for over a century, now. But, finally, Chicago has their guy.
Caleb Williams continues to prove he's different than the stereotypical Bears quarterback ... and that is, without a doubt, a good thing
In the past, Chicago has had their share of different types of quarterbacks. But the common theme among them all has been, simply, that they don't have "it."
Every Bears quarterback, before Williams, has not been good enough to keep for the long haul. They weren't always a quarterback you wanted to have the ball in their hands with the game on the line. With Williams, it's different. He's proving to be precisely the type of quarterback you want to have late in games.
And, funny enough, let's give credit where it's due and call out the obvious about this particular win: Williams didn't have to do much on that final drive. It was all thanks to the kick return by Devin Duvernay. However, Williams knows that the mentality of both he and his team will remain the same.
"...when the defense turns the ball over for us and we get the ball back, we got to put up seven points. When they get three and outs, we got to put up seven points. That's a mindset and belief that we got to grow towards and get better at," he went on.
"That's something that I was preaching on the sideline and I'm going to keep preaching that because we have so much talent, we have so much belief, we have so much of a great coaching staff and all these different things."
The Bears not only have a quarterback who can preach all of the right things.
They have a guy who can back them up on the field.
After this team has amassed five game-winning drives in a matter of 10 games, already, do you think there's a doubt in anyone's mind on that sideline when Williams and the offense get the ball late in the game and it's officially do-or-die territory?
Absolutely not.
Williams' killer instinct is exactly what this team has missed for over 100 years.
