The Chicago Bears might have won the craziest game of the season. The Bears offense watched the Cincinnati Bengals overcome a 41-27 deficit to take a late 42-41 lead with less than a minute remaining in regulation. But Caleb Williams found a way to play the role of hero, as he connected with rookie tight end Colston Loveland for a go-ahead, 58-yard touchdown, ultimately giving Chicago the 47-42 victory.
These are the games that the Bears usually lose. Yet, this year feels different with Ben Johnson in charge. Williams in particular has improved his game, especially when compared to his struggles last year as a rookie.
After the game, Williams discussed the victory. The Bears' quarterback had an important message following the win. Even though adversity hits, the Bears will find ways to win.
Caleb williams has the perfect message after Bears' comeback win over Bengals
"That's what we are," said Williams. "When things don't go our way, when adversity hits, we find ways to win for each other. I think that's what it's been this year. Offense not scoring, defense shows up. Defense or offense might give up a touchdown, special teams puts us in good field position, we kick game-winners and things like that. Today, we had to put up a bunch of points to be able to help our brothers. I think us doing that today builds confidence in those guys on the other side of the ball...building confidence that they know we have their back."
This is what Bears fans are going to like to hear. There is no finger pointing if things go wrong or if one side of the football is struggling. They are going to do their best to help them out.
On Sunday, the Bears defense did have difficulty holding back the Bengals' high-powered offense. They notably gave up two touchdowns in less than a minute of game time. Chicago's defense gave up 495 yards on 65 plays. But Chicago's offense picked up the slack, picking up 576 yards on 76 plays.
Those offensive numbers were expected after the Bears hired Johnson as head coach. He was responsible for turning the Detroit Lions offense into a juggernaut. Williams was asked if there is excitement about the play calls they learn about during the week in the lead-up to games.
"I think Ben actually sometimes wishes for a little bit more excitement when he's installing it, but we're just kind of focused on trying to make sure the play looks good," said Williams. "In the moment, we've practiced these plays like they're a base play that we've been running since training camp. We feel confident, we feel extremely confident about when the play is called, it's going to work, and we're going to go execute it. I think that's kudos to coach and how he coaches us and how he pushes us, but it's also kudos to the players and the belief in each other and when he calls it, it's going to work.
"I think in these moments, and those moments, I think the guys have belief that we're going to win those games. Having those moments come up and find ways to win only provides confidence for us and keep going."
