Bears' offense came back down to Earth at training camp with one headache to fix

The Chicago Bears' offense is already being predicted as one of the best in the NFL entering the 2026 season.

Led by quarterback Caleb Williams, there's no reason to believe they will fall short of any expectations. They have so many weapons, including Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, Colston Loveland, D'Andre Swift, and Kyle Monangai. It also helps to have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL.

Multiple Bears reporters, though, noticed something different about the unit on Day 3 of training camp. ESPN Bears reporter Courtney Cronin documented one of her observations about the offense's up-and-down red zone performance.

"Defense had the upper hand in the first red zone period. Both Austin Booker and Montez Sweat with "sacks" on back-to-back plays. Loveland finished off the drill with a TD."

Bears' offense has something they need to work on during training camp

This was a note that many Bears reporters brought up throughout the third day. CHGO's Mark Carman noticed the same thing with a Williams commentary to it as well.

"Some sloppiness in the red zone. Caleb showed some frustration, leadership."

Williams' frustration on Day 3 was a viral moment on social media, captured by the X account "CalebIsHim." As of the publication of this article, over 2.6 million views have been recorded, showing Williams being upset with the offense for not being set up right.

While this would have been something Williams got criticized for in the past, he actually got a lot of praise for it. This is the time to show frustration from the franchise quarterback. It's also a good sign that he is starting to understand Ben Johnson's offense better, to the point that he knows where players should be lining up.

As for the offense's struggles in the red zone, last year was also kind of a mixed bag for the unit. They were tied for 14th in red-zone scoring percentage at 57.1%.

If there is any consolation, at least the defense made some plays in the red zone. That was the one good thing about the defense last season and how stellar they were in the red zone. It's an area they continue to thrive in.

Last year, there were a lot worse reports coming out of training camp about how much Williams and the offense were struggling to get on the same page and not lining up correctly. If this is the worst thing that happens for the rest of camp, this offense is going to be okay. Still, it's something that needs to improve before the season starts.
