Chicago host shuts down most insane Bears debate imaginable with Caleb Williams

Okay everyone. Let's calm down.

There are some within the Chicago Bears' fan base that might need to take up some breathing exercises with the latest Caleb Williams narrative that is going around.

Last week, the Bears extended backup quarterback Tyson Bagent to a new two-year, $10 million deal that can be worth up to $16 million with incentives. This, piled on top of Williams' lackluster performance against the Kansas City Chiefs last week and Bagent's game-winning touchdown in the same contest, sparked a debate over whether Williams or Bagent should start at quarterback.

This inspired Chicago's 670 The Score host David Haugh to respond to that. While Haugh is a big Bagent fan, even he understands that Williams is still the right guy despite some struggles in head coach Ben Johnson's offensive scheme.

"As his biggest fan, I can tell you that this notion is ridiculous to discuss on August 25. This is not a team that's preparing to hand the baton to a backup quarterback just because he signed a smart, safe, and intelligent insurance policy. It's a very good contract for the player and the team. We know what he is, we know what he isn't."

"Caleb Williams struggled running the offense Friday night against Kansas City. He has not adapted well or consistently to the Ben Johnson scheme and all the things that he's focusing on in the details. He's a second year quarterback. I'm not going to make excuses for him, but I'm also not going to tell you, "His socks need to be pull up and if he did that, he'd be a better quarterback like some ridiculous commentary we got over the weekend. Slow down everybody."

Yes, Williams is still better than Bagent

Fans can be funny sometimes with their overreactions. Williams struggles for one game and all of a sudden Bagent makes more sense to start. It's nonsense.

The first two drives of the Bears-Chiefs game was not pretty for Williams. He was able to turn it around and throw a touchdown on the final drive of the first half. Williams finished the game completing 11 of 15 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown and added 18 yards on the ground.

Bagent had a great preseason and seems to have good control in Johnson's offense so this is not meant to be a knock on him. Bears fans have to remember that Bagent is playing up against backups and third strings so of course he will look better than Williams would.

It's not the end of the world. The sky hasn't fallen. Williams is going to be okay by the time the season starts. Patience is a virtue.
