The aftermath of the Chicago Bears' big preseason showing against the Buffalo Bills this past Sunday has included plenty of fan emotion and hype. But, the players and coaches seem to give a sense that this is more than just hype. Things are changing, and the people are taking notice.
In an interview with NFL personality Kay Adams, wide receiver DJ Moore was asked about his head coach and how both he and Ben Johnson are somewhat similar. The idea was that you never know what either one of them is thinking based on their facial expressions. Moore's assessment of his head coach, following the win, says it all.
"He came in and said the 38 points was good and the fans booed us. He said, 'duly noted.' I'm waiting to see what that means ... I'm glad he was kind of happy that we won, but you never know what he's thinking," Moore said.
Bears fans booed Ben Johnson and the head coach took note
Instead of trying to score again at the end of the game, Johnson had his offense run out the clock en route to a 38-0 victory over the Bills. Fans at Soldier Field proceeded to boo Johnson for not wanting to run up the score even more at that point.
The irony, here, is that Johnson initially told the team one of his goals was to "win and win by a lot" during one of their first meetings all together. The Bears did win by a lot, in this case, but they could've won by more.
What kind of world would we be living in where the Bears are routing opponents and running up the score? The sarcastic and obvious answer is: the preseason.
But, imagine a regular season where the Bears are scoring at will and don't show signs of stopping. That's the type of offense Johnson wants to boast, and for it to happen in Chicago is going to be strange and unfamiliar for a while.
That's precisely what we saw a glimpse of against the Bills, though. Again, this is only preseason and we shouldn't overreact. For Johnson to back up exactly what he's wanting to do, though, means something.
