Jahdae Walker sounds ready for whatever comes his way in Bears' WR3 competition

That "UDFA" chip on Jahdae Walker's shoulder is probably never going away.

As an undrafted rookie, wide receiver Jahdae Walker had an obvious uphill climb to make the Chicago Bears' 53-man roster during 2025 training camp. A strong preseason would be required, of course, and with that he made himself impossible to keep off the roster.

Walker did not play a lot as a rookie though, totaling 86 offensive snaps (78 from Week 16-18) and 61 special teams snaps, and he did not play at all in either of the Bears' playoff games. However, without his clutch touchdown catch in Week 16 against the Green Bay Packers (when Rome Odunze and Luther Burden were both out), things might have looked different for the team in the postseason.

Now, with DJ Moore gone to the Buffalo Bills in an offseason trade and Olamide Zaccheaus gone in free agency, a runway for Walker to have a breakout season in 2026 has appeared.

Jahdae Walker sounds ready for any and all competition for Bears' WR3 role

During a recent appearance on ESPN 1000 with Jeff Joniak and Tom Thayer, before the selection of Zavion Thomas in the third round of the draft added more competition to the Bears' wide receiver mix, Walker was asked if he had a vision for himself in 2026.

"Oh yeah, for sure", Walker said. "Just going in and put my head down and working. Last year was last year. (It) really don't mean anything for me...At this point, I'm starting fresh just like everybody else. So, I'm starting from square one and I'm proving myself again this year."

Thayer then noted how playing for Ben Johnson is a day-in, day-out exercise in proving yourself.

"Definitely..", Walker said. "Being undrafted, you don't get a lot of opportunities in practice. So every ball that was thrown to me, I'm like 'I have to catch this.' There's no other way....Taking advantage of my opportunities, that's how I got my shot."

Walker absolutely has a shot to earn a far bigger role in his second season. The WR3 role for the Bears will be open to whoever goes out and seizes it, with no consideration for anything other than performance in camp and preseason games.

But as the equation gets complicated by the addition of a pick in the top-90 overall, Walker is unsurprisingly set to take his undrafted free agent mentality into showing he's the best man for that WR3 job in 2026 (and/or beyond).
