Jaquan Brisker's explosive reaction to Matt Eberflus firing confirms players wanted change
For the first time in the history of their organization, the Chicago Bears made the season their fire their head coach in-season. Shortly after Matt Eberflus address reporters on Friday morning following the team's loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, news broke that Eberflus had been fired as the team's head coach.
The decision by the Bears to fire Eberflus came after a loss where players did not offer a ringing endorsement to their now former head coach. Following Eberflus failing to call a timeout during the closing seconds of Thursday's loss, several players in the locker room seemed to be at odds with the decision making from the head coach.
One player who was not on the field for the Bears on Thursday was safety Jaquan Brisker. Brisker is currently on injured reserve while in concussion protocol but he did not waste time in reacting to the firing on Friday.
The mistake would have been if the Bears decided to keep Eberflus following Thursday's debacle. The Bears' current six-game losing steak had been proof that Eberflus lost the trust of the locker room. For all the talk there was prior to the season about how strong the Bears' culture was, a Hail Mary loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 8 exposed that it was culture built on a house of cards.
Brisker has not been shy about his feelings regarding the current state of the Bears in recent weeks. His willingness to be so direct with his criticism of his own team has been a sign that the Bears' locker room is becoming divided. The Bears' decision to fire Eberflus may be the front office's attempt to bring the locker room back together.
