One year might have been all it was with former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, but it was long enough to know that there was something special with him.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson hired Doyle to be his offensive coordinator last season, despite the fact that Johnson was going to be handling the play-calling duties. Doyle still thrived in his first and only season on the job as the Baltimore Ravens ended up hiring him this offseason for the same role under new head coach Jesse Minter, but this time Doyle was going to have full control of the offense.
Doyle is pretty lucky as he gets to go from working with Caleb Williams to now working with two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. The Ravens quarterback offered up a ton of praise for his new offensive coordinator.
“It’s a different system than what I’m accustomed to being in, and I feel like there’s going to be a lot of explosiveness this year,” Jackson said. “The way [offensive coordinator] Declan [Doyle] calls plays and his creativity with his mind — how detailed he is — it’s mind-blowing. I’m excited.”

Chicago had one of the top offenses in the NFL last year, ranking sixth in total offense and third in rushing. Johnson might have been the one calling the shots, but Doyle did a lot to help the offense evolve and grow from the nightmare that was 2024.
Doyle was a big part of the game planning and coaching up the players to follow Johnson's instructions. It was a huge benefit for the then-29-year-old coordinator as he had the chance to learn under Johnson, one of the NFL's smartest offensive minds.
The Bears had to then deal with their own new offensive coordinator changes as Johnson promoted Press Taylor to take over the role after being the pass game coordinator last year. Taylor has offensive coordinator experience, having served that role for three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2022 to 2024.

Bears fans are going to miss Doyle on the coaching staff, as they knew all year how special he was going to be and that with the right opportunity, he could help his coaching career. Now they get to cheer him on from afar while they watch Taylor doing the same thing under Johnson.
