Stop me if you've heard this one before but the Chicago Bears had a field goal blocked. This happened a week removed from having what would have been the game-winning field goal blocked against the Green Bay Packers in Week 11 and now the Minnesota Vikings also got a key field goal blocked against Chicago.
Let's set the script for those who need a refresher. With the game tied at 7 points apiece, the Bears offense put together a 10-play, 40-yard drive that unfortunately didn't lead to points. Cairo Santos lined up to kick a 48-yard field goal that Jerry Tillery of the Vikings went on to block.
That blocked field goal gave the Vikings great field position on their ensuing drive and the bad guys put together a six-play, 53-yard drive that resulted in a Minnesota touchdown. The Bears went from potentially having a 10-7 lead to trailing 14-7 all because of a mistake that is becoming too common from their special teams unit.
Moose Johnston was in disbelief while calling the game from the broadcaster's booth and wasn't shy about voicing his pessimistic opinions on the Bears coaching staff. Johnston said, "Having a field goal blocked in the same spot in two straight weeks in unacceptable" and he's absolutely right.
Moose Johnston slams Bears coaching staff after blocked field goal
This field goal wasn't as costly as the one that the Bears had blocked a week ago against the Packers but it's unsettling seeing the team making the same grueling mistakes in key moments. The hope is that the Bears can find a way to grind out a tough victory against a tough divisional opponent but they need to start learning from these mistakes.
Johnston was right with his comments though. The staff and team should have learned from their game-altering mistake a week ago but it's the same stuff again in the very next game. That's not great to see from Bears fans who were hoping to see this team turn the corner and push for a playoff spot in the back half of the season.
