One stat will have Bears fans understanding Ben Johnson's frustrations with WRs

Yep it all makes sense now.

While the 2025 season was about as special as it gets for the Chicago Bears, that doesn't mean that head coach Ben Johnson was happy about everything that happened.

One thing that Johnson mentioned at the NFL owners' meeting was his frustration with the coaching staff and the players, specifically the wide receivers, as there were missed opportunities to get open and drop easy passes. Senior researcher for the NFL, Tony Holzman-Escareno, shared Next Gen Stats data to back up everything Johnson was saying about the Bears' receivers, noting the most pass yards lost due to drops in a single season since 2021.

1. Justin Herbert (2021) – 436
2. Josh Allen (2024) – 409
3. Trevor Lawrence (2021) - 404
3. Caleb Williams (2025) - 404
5. Trevor Lawrence (2022) - 397
6. Tom Brady (2022) - 395

Bears leaving a lot of yards on the field with the drops

This is an infuriating stat for Bears fans to see, as those yards could have helped Caleb Williams become the first 4,000-yard passer in franchise history, but instead, he fell short at 3,942 yards. It was rookie running back Kyle Monangai who led the team in drops with six.

Others with a high amount of drops include Olamide Zaccheaus with five, Luther Burden and D'Andre Swift had four, DJ Moore with three, and Rome Odunze with two. Surprisingly enough, the tight ends, Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet, combined for just three drops as the two had 88 catches between them.

During the offseason, Moore and Zaccheaus did not return to the team, with Moore being traded to the Buffalo Bills and Zaccheaus signing with the Atlanta Falcons. The Bears could look at a wide receiver in the 2026 NFL Draft to fill the WR3 and WR4 roles. Keep in mind that Kalif Raymond was signed as well, so he could play a key role in the Bears' offense in 2026.

While things were great in 2025, Johnson knows the offense left a lot of meat on the table and that the receivers need to perform better next season.
