4 Chicago Bears practice squad players likely to see the field
The Chicago Bears set their 53-man roster, but any fan knows that the roster is never official or completely set. It will continue to move as injuries, and performance dictate things. So, the players joining the team on the practice squad still have plenty of chances to end up on the active roster. Which four players are most likely to see the field?
1. Sam Roberts
This one is pretty much cheating. It is less of a prediction and more of a statement that Sam Roberts will be on the Chicago Bears' active roster at some point.
The Bears signed Roberts after he was released by the New England Patriots and cleared waivers. Roberts was a sixth-round pick with the Patriots in 2022 and must have fallen out of favor with the new coaching staff.
After minimal work as a rookie, he played in seven games and started one for the Patriots last season. The experience he has is greater than Michael Dwumfour and Byron Cowart, who were both released by the team.
The Bears' intention to bring Roberts up must have to do with Zacch Pickens, though. Pickens was banged up in the preseason finale and has not practiced since. He may not be out long, but his status for week one is not good, so the team went out and traded for Chris Williams, and now they are signing Sam Roberts. Both should be on the week one roster.
2. Reddy Steward
A lot of Bears fans wanted Reddy Steward to make the initial 53-man roster. The UDFA from Troy had a great summer, but he is just that, a UDFA. Teams passed him over plenty of times before, and they did it again as he cleared waivers and circled back to the team.
The reality is that Steward is their third slot cornerback, and that is hard to justify keeping on the roster. However, the Bears want to maintain depth in the slot, because they know that they need it.
Last season, both Kyler Gordon and Josh Blackwell missed time and the Bears leaned on Greg Stroman in the slot. Steward beat out Stroman for the practice squad nod this offseason, and he will get the call if this happens again.
3. Jake Curhan
The Chicago Bears' tackle depth is thin and questionable, to say the least. They have their two starters, but Kiran Amegadjie is the current backup on both sides. That is the third-round rookie from Yale, who came out of college a bit raw and then proceeded to not take a snap in the preseason.
The Bears will have to do some roster mechanics, but they may want to call up Jake Curhan before week one. Do they really want to see Braxton Jones get hurt, and then throw Amegadjie onto the field for the first time in his career, two weeks removed from the injury, against seasoned NFL veterans in the middle of a game while he is cold? Heck, imagine if he had to play right tackle due to a Darnell Wright injury. He never played that side before.
Matt Pryor is a guard with some tackle experience and would make that move in a pinch, but something about the situation says that Curhan will find himself making the roster. If Darnell Wright gets injured this year, it is hard to see the team wanting anyone but Curhan to step into that role right now.
4. Micah Baskerville
Micah Baskerville is another player who may have been in the 54-59 range of the roster when it came down to it. He just did not make it due to numbers. However, the UDFA is now in his second year with the Bears, and he got called up as a rookie. So, there is certainly a chance he gets called up again.
If any of the five linebackers are injured, he is on the roster. Even more than that, he could get called up due to special teams value. Baskerville played two games as a special teamer for Chicago last year and did well in the preseason in that role.
The Bears have some extra spots dedicated to players who may not have the same role on special teams. So, there may be some calls up and down during the season that end up with Baskerville getting action in the regular season for the second straight season.
