Through two games, Caleb Williams was pacing to be one of the worst rookie quarterbacks, as most rookies struggle out of the gates, but not to the extent that Williams did. However, the Chicago Bears had two big games against not-so-good defenses with the Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Rams. The Bears went 1-1, but Williams started to produce more stats, still, are we seeing enough progress?
Williams threw for 363 yards against the Colts. However, there is some nit-picking to do. He completed a 44-yard hail mary that was tipped by a defender and needed 52 attempts to get to that total. Most of that production came as the Colts had a multiple-score lead and the defense began to soften up.
We just saw Justin Fields throw for 312 yards on 34 attempts in the same game scenario against the Colts. Williams was at his sharpest against the Los Angeles Rams. He completed 73.9% of his passes. Still, he put up 157 yards total.
Caleb is improving week-by-week for the Chicago Bears.
A lot of this is because the run game was working, but D’Andre Swift also led the team with 72 receiving yards. Most of what Williams did was complete schemed-up passes and checkdowns. If anything, it was a step forward from Waldron. Still, the receivers ended up with 7 catches for 51 yards combined.
A secondary that allowed 121 yards to Jameson Williams, 130 yards to Marvin Harrison Jr., and 175 yards to Jauan Jennings had the Bears big-name receivers locked down, as Williams could not find the connection.
Still, at quarterback, there is usually a moment where you realize you have your guy, or you do not. The Bears have been searching for that moment. Williams is on the right trajectory, but he has yet to show us that moment that he clearly belongs. A struggling Carolina Panthers defense is up next, and this gives Williams another chance to take advantage.
