Chicago Bears fans were definitely caught off guard by the fact that their team decided to select Stanford tight end Sam Roush in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Knowing they have Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet already there at tight end, it left many confused about why the Bears would bring Roush to Chicago. When Roush spoke with reporters, even he was feeling the same way about the Bears selecting him.

"I didn't think I was in the cards for the Bears, but I'm frickin' fired up," Roush said via The Score's Chris Emma.

Roush has been regarded as one of the best blocking tight ends in the draft and fills a need for the Bears. Something about Roush, though, is that he's pretty good at catching the ball as well after having 49 receptions for 545 yards and two touchdowns last year with Stanford.

Loveland is the top tight end on the roster, so there shouldn't be any concerns there, as he might end up being the leading receiver on the team. The real question is how Kmet and Roush get used in the offense moving forward.

If Kmet is not going to be traded, he should stay on as TE2 and be used in the passing game. Roush will be used as well, but more in the running game and to help the top-five unit from last year improve.

The Bears at least have the future set up at tight end for when Kmet eventually leaves the team via trade, release, or simply walks in free agency. Loveland and Roush actually will complement each other, even if no one could have predicted that sentence ever being typed out a few months ago.
