The expectations for Chicago Bears undrafted rookie wide receiver JP Richardson were not very high entering training camp. Two weeks have changed that dramatically.
Richardson has been impressing at training camp by making great catches and big plays for the Bears' offense. He's been working with the backups, but seems to be building good chemistry with quarterback Tyson Bagent.
ESPN Bears beat reporter Courtney Cronin shared a play made by Richardson in Sunday's practice that stood out to everyone on the team. Cronin included new head coach Ben Johnson's comments on the former TCU product.
"The best throw of the day came from backup quarterback Tyson Bagent, who ripped a pass over the middle to UDFA wide receiver JP Richardson for a long touchdown. Coach Ben Johnson said Richardson has stood out "quite a bit" throughout 10 training camp practices."
Richardson is well on his way to earning a roster spot on the Bears
Looking back at Richardson's college career, he showed himself to be the model of consistency and improvement at Oklahoma State and TCU. His senior year in 2024 was his best with 57 receptions for 733 yards and two touchdowns, while adding a punt return for a touchdown with the Horned Frogs.
Richardson feels like a solid fit as a potential slot receiver in the Bears' offense. He's got stiff competition to deal with as rookie second-round pick Luther Burden III and Olamide Zaccheaus would be ahead of him. Adding in DJ Moore and Rome Odunze, Chicago won't have many receiver openings on the roster.
The most significant competitors for Richardson at camp are Tyler Scott, Devin Duvernay, and Miles Boykin. Duvernay might be a lock on the roster with his return skills. Scott and Boykin are big question marks themselves as to whether they can make the final roster.

At worst, Richardson has made a strong argument for becoming a member of the practice squad. He has a legitimate shot to make the Bears' 53-man roster, but some good performances in preseason will be needed.
