This disturbing trend could doom the Bears if Johnson doesn’t act now

The Ben Johnson era has gotten off to a painfully-rough start for the Chicago Bears. After a Monday Night Football collapse in Week 1, the Bears came out and were steamrolled by Johnson's former team in Week 2.

The Detroit Lions exposed a disturbing trend that this Bears team is going to need to address somehow, some way, or this season will be a lost cause. That problem is none other than the likes of cornerback Tyrique Stevenson.

Against the Lions, Stevenson was caught out of position time after time, whether it was against Amon-Ra St. Brown or Jameson Williams. The Bears cornerback was made to look the fool over and over again. It was downright ugly, and that's even being a little kind.

After Stevenson's Week 1 showing, things certainly got a whole lot worse. He actually wasn't horrible against the Vikings, but there were certainly signs of "bad Tyrique."

Tyrique Stevenson highlights a massive problem for Ben Johnson and the Bears

With Stevenson being such a liability in coverage against Detroit, it brings fans right back to that "Fail Mary" situation last year against Washington. He hasn't been the same player since that game, and there's no arguing that fact.

But, aside from Stevenson, the Bears may be facing a much more serious problem. They saw starting cornerback Jaylon Johnson leave the game for good, in Detroit, as well. It was the groin injury, that had been plaguing him previously, which caused him to leave the Lions game.

Chicago had been playing Detroit fairly tough prior to Johnson's exit, but after it? The Lions poured it on. They showed no mercy.

Without Johnson on the field, the Bears defense was in a world of trouble. Between Stevenson's ineptitude and Nahshon Wright's inconsistencies, this secondary looked like they were in way over their heads.

If Johnson is going to miss any more time, Chicago is in for a rough year. Starting 0-2 and already possessing a tougher schedule, the Bears will have no answer in their secondary without him.

But, if Johnson is able to play next week and the Bears want to switch things up, (Ben) Johnson could choose to bench Stevenson in favor of Wright. it wouldn't be an end-all, be-all type of fix. But, Johnson needs to send a message. Stevenson has been plain bad, for a while, now. And, to be fair to Wright, he actually played pretty well against the Vikings.

Even going out and finding a trade for a capable cornerback should be on the table for Johnson and Ryan Poles. Whatever it is, some type of solution has to happen soon, or this season will spiral out of control, and fast.
