The rookie running back didn’t draw the start, but he ended with more rushes (18), more rushing yards (75), and a higher snap count (53%) than his counterpart in Damien Williams. It’s easy to say that Herbert exceeded expectations on Sunday and is likely in line for a larger role come next Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

Herbert, the 5-foot-9 212-pound rookie out of Virginia Tech, moved the ball in his first large NFL role with David Montgomery out. This committee will be an interesting one to watch between Williams and Herbert; since the team was leading a majority of the afternoon, they had the luxury of running the football.

The split ended with both backs having 18 touches but Hebert being on the field for more plays than Williams. It’s either the team wanted to see what Herbert could do in a real NFL setting, or they felt more comfortable with him in the short game.

Regardless, the Bears should plan on continuing to use Herbert as much as they can. With his 4.2 yards per carry, the Bears will need that to open the field up for Justin Fields to throw as much as he can.

The Packers’ defense this season has not been great by any means, and using its backfield duo is likely the team’s best way to upset their rivals from the north.
