Bears' bye week won't fix what Ben Johnson knows is clearly broken

This is still a problem.

It's been a lovely bye week for the Chicago Bears, as they could use the time for players to recover from the overwhelming number of injuries, but they are still facing issues with the team.

There has been a lot of good that has come with the first four weeks of the season, thanks to Caleb Williams' development and the defense finding ways to fight through injuries. Chicago is 2-2 on the season and appears to be in good shape for the rest of the season with the momentum they have picked up.

That doesn't mean the franchise doesn't have any lingering concerns that need to be addressed over the next week or so. One aspect of their game must improve if they want any shot at the postseason.

Chicago's running game is still not where it needs to be

It was a problem for this team last year, and it continues to be a problem in 2025. There are a few elements that are impacting what the Bears are doing to hold themselves back from running the ball efficiently.

D'Andre Swift already had a ton of pressure entering the season as he had to improve in order to keep his job. Last season, Swift averaged roughly 3.8 yards per carry, the worst of his career. So far in 2025, he's actually managed to do worse, averaging just 3.3 yards a carry.

The problem is the Bears aren't getting any explosive plays on the ground. They have had only one run of 20 yards or more, and that was Swift running for exactly 20 yards. That's not going to cut it.

Chicago's offensive line is about to go through some changes at tackle, with Theo Benedet looking to move to left tackle. Some believe it might actually be Darnell Wright moving to left tackle and Ozzy Trapilo to right tackle after his great performance against the Las Vegas Raiders.

With all the money that was spent on the offensive line in the offseason, the Bears are only ranked 24th in rushing with 102.3 yards per game. Where did the ROI go with the money dropped on three new interior offensive linemen?

Something needs to change in the running game to help the team. Some have suggested a trade for either New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara or New York Jets running back Breece Hall. Kamara and Hall are the home run hitters the Bears need out of the backfield.

If this running game doesn't improve, don't be surprised if swift changes are made to the team....starting with Swift himself.
