Bears' panic meter might be high, but Caleb Williams' QB ranking stays the same

No movement there.

There was a lot that was ugly about the Chicago Bears' 52-21 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, but their franchise quarterback, Caleb Williams, remains....average.

Williams finished last week's game, completing 19 of 30 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns to one interception. He added 27 yards on the ground with five carries in the blowout loss.

Those numbers won't jump out at anyone, but they also won't scare people off from him either. That's why his rankings among the quarterbacks in the NFL will remain about the same.

FanSided's Lou Scataglia released his latest QB rankings, where he had Williams at about the same ranking he has remained so far this season at 21st. While Bears fans are panicking, Scataglia is still trying to figure out Williams.

"Is it time to panic in Chicago? Caleb Williams did not play horribly against the Detroit Lions, but the Bears now have an 0-2 record and have lost their first two divisional games against the Vikings and now Lions. It just does not feel like Chicago is even close to being there, but I guess Williams and the offense could begin to put things together down the stretch?

Heck, I have no idea…"

All Bears fans are in agreement about being confused with Williams

Looking at the stats through two games, they aren't bad for Williams, but again, it's not going to get anyone excited. He's completed 61.5% of his passes for 417 yards and three touchdowns to one interception. Williams has also run for 85 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson has assured everyone that he is seeing good progress from his quarterback. At the same time, Johnson is not delusional in knowing that there are things Williams needs to work on.

Many people have noticed that there is a different confidence in him in the pocket. He's been more decisive with his decisions when they are quick passes.

His biggest problem is if he faces pressure from the defense. Bears fans are going to get two different extremes: either Williams creates a fantastic scramble run or pass, or he makes a wild decision that ends up as an interception or intentional grounding.

The scramble drill is where Williams needs to improve, and while it is somewhat better, a lot of those destructive tendencies from last year are creeping back in 2025. Johnson needs to take time with his young quarterback to improve upon that.

Chicago now sits at 0-2 and has the Dallas Cowboys to try to turn things somewhat around. It all falls on Williams' shoulders as he will either rise to the occasion or crumble.
