Ben Johnson confirms starter at key position Bears fans might actually question

Is that the right choice?

One thing the Chicago Bears' 25-24 win over the Washington Commanders in Week 6 confirmed is that the team might have some controversy at one position.

Bears backup kicker Jake Moody came in for the injured Cairo Santos, who has been dealing with a right thigh injury before the Commanders game. There was some concern with Moody after missing two field goals, with one of them blocked, in Week 1 with the San Francisco 49ers, which caused him to get cut after the game.

Instead, Moody silenced all the critics with a heroic performance against the Commanders. He did have a kick blocked in the game, but Moody made his other four field goal attempts, including the game-winning 38-yard field goal to seal the win.

Moody instantly became the toast of the town in Chicago and received praise from everyone. It even had some thinking about whether he should be the starting kicker instead of Santos.

Ben Johnson addresses kicker position and who the starter will be

During his press conference, Johnson was asked by a reporter whether Santos would be the starting kicker once he is healthy. There was no hesitation from Johnson as he needed just one word to answer that question.

"Yes."

This might not sit well with Bears fans, as some are not big fans of his after his worst season in Chicago last year. It really hasn't been all that bad for Santos, though, in 2025.

Yes, the first game with the missed 50-yard field goal and the kickoff confusion in the fourth quarter was not great for him. It's what caused the Bears to sign Moody to the practice squad in the first place.

Since that first game, though, Santos has been perfect. This season, he's made six of seven field goals and has converted all 11 of his extra points for the Bears.

It's easy in the moment to want to have Moody be the full-time starter, but Santos has done nothing to lose his job, so Johnson should stick with him as the starting kicker.
