There was one moment from the Chicago Bears' 28-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 14 that the team would undoubtedly want to have back after much reflection.
With 45 seconds left in the first half and the Packers holding a 7-3 lead, Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love dropped back into the pocket and was able to hit Bo Melton for a 45-yard touchdown pass to give the Packers a 14-3 lead going into halftime. No one was covering Melton in the slot, and it appeared as though Jaquan Brisker was supposed to get him, but there was some breakdown in coverage for the Bears.
Many reporters were wondering what happened on that play and waited until they saw Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen for the answer. Allen took accountability for the mistake on the play.
"Look, I really put that on me. I gotta coach that up better in terms of how we have to defend that. They had a good play. We didn’t defend it as well as we needed to. And really, I gotta do a better job there."
Bears' secondary had a rough night against the Packers
That was just one of three touchdown passes Love threw in the game that were from 23 or more yards out. The Bears struggled to cover some of the speed guys on the team, including C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who surrendered a touchdown from Christian Watson.
Chicago not having Kyler Gordon in the game ended up hurting them more than some fans expected when he got injured in pre-game warmups. It exposed a problem within the secondary that'll need to be fixed before the season.
This has been a common problem for the Bears' defense this season, as they have allowed a lot of yardage and big plays. What has saved them is the NFL-leading 27 turnovers they have forced this season.
