Don’t be shocked if Bears eventually explore this DJ Moore trade

Just hang with me for a minute, here.

First off, allow me to clarify this fact: I absolutely love DJ Moore and think he is one of the more valuable players on the Chicago Bears. But, the more I have thought about it, the more the idea of trading him makes a ton of sense -- down the line.

Look at the facts which have arisen during the offseason and throughout camp. Head coach Ben Johnson has raved about Rome Odunze. He has also had high praise for rookie Luther Burden III, whom he single-handedly drafted as the first wide receiver during his Chicago tenure.

Not only that, but quarterback Caleb Williams and veteran Olamide Zaccheaus have formed a strong bond, which has been noted by several team reporters over the offseason. Even Williams, himself, lights up when talking about Zaccheaus in front of the media.

So, why a DJ Moore trade and why now? In short, this isn't a conversation for right now.

The Bears very well might explore a DJ Moore trade next year

This is hypothetical, but it makes a ton of sense. Should Odunze pan out as a no. 1 type of wide receiver in this offense, that's the first step. And, by all accounts, he and Williams have a strong relationship and Johnson's offense is going to aid in that continuing to blossom.

In a perfect world, Burden becomes Moore's replacement. He's been compared to both Odunze and Moore, but Burden's ability after the catch is way too similar to ignore. There are a lot of similar characteristics between he and Moore, which also makes it easy to replace the latter with Burden.

Let's say the Bears look very comfortable with Odunze, Burden and Zaccheaus. In that case, they could try and flip Moore to another team for a top-tier edge rusher.

Don't forget, Moore's contract is extremely tradable. He agreed to an extension just last year and is under contract through 2029 with an average salary of $27.5 million -- less than the $30 million number many receivers are going to want going forward.

If the Bears find they can go out and get another starter at defensive end while keeping Dayo Odeyingbo and Austin Booker as their no. 3 and no. 4 guys, don't think Ryan Poles won't entertain it. One more solid pass rusher would make this defense an elite unit.
