The Chicago Bears released their first depth chart, and we are about to watch them in the first preseason game. This is the perfect time for us to drop a 53-man roster projection. While we may update this projection on Monday after watching the first preseason game, it is a good place to start and see where the team goes from here.

Chicago Bears 53-man roster projection before first preseason game

Quarterback (3): Justin Fields, PJ Walker, Nathan Peterman

The Chicago Bears will probably keep a third quarterback because of the new rules that they do not count against the active roster on game days. Peterman makes it because Bagent will stick with Luke Getsy, knowing he is a project.

Running back (5): Khalil Herbert, D'onta Foreman, Roschon Johnson, Travis Homer, Khari Blasingame

Travis Homer is currently behind Trestan Ebner, but we are projecting game action to change that outcome potentially.

Wide Receiver (6): DJ Moore, Chase Claypool, Darnell Mooney, Equanimeous St. Brown, Velus Jones, Tyler Scott

Dante Pettis just returned, but until he shows a lot more, this top six may locked in.

Tight End (3): Cole Kmet, Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis

With Jake Tonges and Chase Allen out of the picture early into training camp, these three are locked in with little competition for a fourth to make it.

Offensive line (9): Braxton Jones, Teven Jenkins, Cody Whitehair, Nate Davis, Darnell Wright, Lucas Patrick, Larry Borom, Ja'Tyre Carter, Alex Leatherwood

Deiter Eiselen and Doug Kramer are the two who just missed the cut, but both could stick on the practice squad. Meanwhile, Alex Leatherwood is also right on the edge.

Defensive line (5): Andrew Billings, Justin Jones, Zacch Pickens, Gervon Dexter, Bravvion Roy

Will Bravvion Roy make it? Does Travis Bell make it? Do they even keep five, or just four lineman?

Edge Rushers (5): DeMarcus Walker, Yannick Ngakoue, Rasheem Green, Dominique Robinson, Terrell Lewis

Trevis Gipson appears to be the odd man out of this rotation. As long as Lewis is healthy, he should make it.

Linebackers (5): Tremaine Edmunds, TJ Edwards, Jack Sanborn, Noah Sewell, Dylan Cole

DeMarquis Gates is right on the edge of making the roster, but we did not get there. The preseason may help push him on.

Cornerbacks (5): Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, Tyrique Stevenson, Terrell Smith, Josh Blackwell

Greg Stroman, Michael Ojemudia, Jaylon Jones, and Kindle Vildor all could compete for the sixth cornerback spot, but none have done enough in training camp to get that nod.

Safeties (4): Jaquan Brisker, Eddie Jackson, Elijah Hicks, AJ Thomas

A.J. Thomas has been ahead of Kendall Williamson and Adrian Colbert on the depth chart, and while those two bring special teams potential, neither should viewed as a lock either.

Special teams (3): Cairo Santos, Patrick Scales, Trenton Gill
