What would Mitchell Trubisky’s rating in Madden be if you were to give him a realistic rating?

Everyone who has played the video game Madden knows what I am talking when I say the first you do when you buy the game is checking out the depth charts and look at the player ratings. The next thing you do is get irrationally upset at the idea that the game could rate some of your favorite players in such a way.

However, nobody goes into the game with an idea of what they think he should be. “Oh, he’s an 80, he is at least an 83.” It would be interesting to see before seeing the rating where exactly you think he should be, though. This series will do just that. We are going to look through the Madden rating of every Chicago Bears player. To start, Mitchell Trubisky.

2017 Season

To get some perspective on how to project Trubisky, let’s start from his 2017 rating. He finished the year rated as a 75. That came on a season where he started in just 12 games but finished with as many touchdowns as interceptions. He also completed less than 60% of his passes. A lot of that can be attributed to his skill players and offense, but it feels as though the 75 was fair.

2018 Projections

According to Mike Clay of ESPN.com, Mitchell Trubisky is in line for just under 4,000 yards. He would throw about 23 touchdowns and 13 interceptions with a 61% percent completion percentage.

The yardage feels about right, but there are some potential fixes for his interceptions to go down and his completion rate to go up.

Player Comparables

Nonetheless, 2017 comparable that come up in our projection evaluations and in terms of Mike Clay’s projections are Derek Carr, Andy Dalton, and Jared Goff. These players 2017 seasons would make a lot of sense for Trubisky.

All have that touch of athleticism. All three are prone to mistakes, as will Trubisky. On top of that, Jared Goff is the obvious second year, new coach comparison. You can argue that 2017 was down years for Dalton and Carr but these are seasoned veterans while Trubisky is entering year two. The comparisons seem fair.

At the end of the season in Madden, Goff was rated 84, while Dalton and Carr were rated 81. It shows Madden is about on as these three did finish in a similar statistical tier. Goff’s team had the most success, so he gets the bump. Is this the range that Trubisky will enter in year two?

Madden Projection: 80

A 5-point increase based on a bunch of offseason moves on paper seems high on first thought. He could get into the Carr to Goff range, but Madden is not going to put him there. It would not be surprising if they were down on Trubisky and even put him at 78.

Still, entering his 2018 season, I would expect him to play at about that 80 range. He could hit the upside of Goff and finish as 84 rating, but to start the season he still has to prove himself.

Still, with his team, with the offense, and with the perception of what Trubisky has done as a leader, the 5-point increase will be warranted and should be the player we expect in Week One.
